Coins - 1983 Prestige Set Certificate of Authenticity and Coin Specifications

In many ways, the first remains special. The 1983 Prestige Set was the first offered by the U.S. Mint. In addition, the Certificate of Authenticity notes other firsts occurring with this set.

This first Prestige Set's Certificate of Authenticity is printed on simple, cream-colored card stock and contains an important message from the Director of the Mint.

The text says:

----------

THE DIRECTOR OF THE UNITED STATES MINT
WASHINGTON, D.C. 20220

Dear Mint Customer:

Many "firsts" are associated with this unique set of 1983 proof coins from the United States Mint.

The "Discus Thrower" Olympic coin is the first Olympic coin struck by the Mint and the first ninety percent silver dollar to be produced since 1935. This is our first PRESTIGE SET and the design of the coin was executed by the first woman to hold the office of Chief Engraver of the United States. As you can see, this package is unlike any ever before released by the Mint and one of which we are extremely proud.

These jewel-like coins are all struck in proof condition at the San Francisco Assay Office and all bear the "S" mint mark. They have been produced with specially prepared dies and blanks and have been multiply struck to enhance their beauty. The frosted relief design and the high luster of the background provide magnificent detail and result in a coin of true beauty.

Each coin has been struck in accordance with the coin specifications mandated by law and each is a genuine proof coin of the highest quality available from the U.S. Mint. On the reverse of this card you will find the specifications for each of the six proof coins.

I do hope you will enjoy owning this PRESTIGE SET.

Sincerely,
Donna Pope
