Coins - 2005
Proof Set Certificate of Authenticity and Coin Specifications
The 2005 proof set included a certificate of authenticity on a folded white
card with the title on the front, the Director's message on the back and the coin specifications inside. The folded
card in the 2005 proof set changed slightly from earlier proofs sets with the positioning of the information. Two
tables inside the folded card addressed the coin specifications and characteristics of the eleven proof coins in
the 2005 proof set.
Like earlier years, the outside of the folded card had a white shiny surface, but with the 2005 proof set,
the front included the blue and red 50 state quarters emblem on the white background. "United States
Mint" is centered below the emblem and above the title which states, "Certificate of Authenticity 2005
United States Mint Proof Set®." On the back of the card, the Director of the Mint's message certifies the proof
coins in the set (scroll further for the message details).
The Director's message states:
The United States Mint certifies that this proof set of current United States coinage was produced and
packaged by the United States Mint at San Francisco. Each coin bears the "S" mint mark of that
facility.
United States Mint proof coins are produced from carefully selected planchets, or coin blanks, that have
been burnished to a high luster. The polished blanks, which are carefully handled to minimize scratches and
abrasions, are struck on specially adapted coining presses. Each coin is struck at least twice to bring forth
the most minute detail with remarkable clarity.
This year's proof set features the inclusion of two new nickels which commemorate the
bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark expedition. The 2005-dated quarters of the 50 State
Quarters® Program are also included in this set, honoring California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas and West
Virginia in the order in which they were admitted into the Union.
Henrietta Holsman Fore
Director
United States Mint
The white matte finish of the inside of the card provides the backdrop for the two tables of coin
specifications. On the top half, the table lists the cent, two nickels, dime, half dollar and dollar
coins' characteristics. At the bottom of the card, a second table gives the specifications for the
five state quarter proof coins.

The specifications for the six proof coins in one of the lenses in the 2005 proof set are
in the table at the top.
